Leadership: an Important Ingredient of Corporate World

Leadership has assumed an increased significance in the modern corporate world. This has assumed the consequence akin to the battlefield. The organizations having effective and influential leaders leave others behind in the competition. Since, the leadership involves an interpersonal influence of the leader over his group, the traits of a leader assume unparalleled significance. It is a time-tested observation that in times of difficulty, the influence of good leaders helps the organizations tide over the problems.

Since, the leader assumes a significant role in managing interpersonal relations in an organization, he should posses the essential qualities like intelligence, good personality, self-confidence, vision and foresight, dynamic thinking, positive attitude and humane approach. As an organization is a deliberate creation by human beings for certain specified objectives, the activities of its members need to be directed in a certain way and a leader performs the role of directing. Good leadership in an organization is a motivating factor in itself for its members. The employees have faith in their leaders and trust him with even their lives. They enjoy confidence in their leader, leading to increased efficiency. Effective leadership in an organization also results in high morale of the employees, having a direct bearing on high productivity and organizational stability.

It is thus evident that in case we want to be a successful manager, first we should learn to be good leaders. So, let us work hard and strive towards excellence to become good leader.

Better Days Ahead for 7 Sisters?

The other day I witnessed a very touchy scene in a prelude to 'kaun banega Crorepati' on an Indian TV channel where Amitabh Bacchan asks a girl hailing from NE India the name of the the  country where Kohima is located. The girl feigns ignorance and opts for audience poll. The spectators express surprise over her ignorance. Amitabh Bacchan conducts the audience poll and apprises her that 100% audience has opted for India. The girl replies, "jaante to sab hain par maante kitne hain"? Well, this appears to be the perception of my country men about the 7 north eastern states of India, more popularly known as the 7 sisters. They have always lagged behind in the race for development in the Indian Union for the reasons best known to its political masters. As far as development is concerned, even the state of J&K, where majority of Indian legislations do not even apply, is also way ahead.

It is not that these states do not possess the potential for development but because of the apathy and neglect over the years they have remained under developed. As a result, people have taken up arms against the State. Militancy which started in early 60's is still thriving, though
at a its low ebb. The entire region is culturally very rich, beautiful and full of untapped resources. Some of the most beautiful places form part of the region. Mokokchung in Nagaland is so beautiful that it is known as 'Paris of the East'. Mizoram is a state known for music, guitar and care free life. Manipur is known for sports whereas, Towang in Arunachal Pradesh is known for its Monastries. Meghalaya possesses some of the most  beautiful scenic spots in the country. No tribe in the country can match the natural instincts of Konyaks, inhabitants of Mon district of Nagaland. Village heads in Nagaland are known as Angs. They still maintain village museums where human skulls are preserved. Head hunting, as a result of tribal rivalary, was prevalent in these areas till late 90's. Hence, these areas are a world by themselves. The entire region possesses tremendous untapped potential for tourism. The Centre and the states together can convert the region in to a beautiful tourist destination which will bring in  much needed revenue in to the region.

It needs to be examined seriously as to why the entire NE region has remained backward even after 67 years of Indian independance. Low priority for the region set by the Central Govt and indifferent attitude of the State Govts appear to be the main contributing factor towards this. Other reasons responsible for under development are  the  remoteness of the area, inclement weather, corruption and militancy. It would be shocking to note that locals in some of these areas have to walk for miles to fetch basic neccesities like salt. For medical facilities too, they have to travel long distances. In majority of these areas black top roads though,  exist on paper but  on ground you will hardly find foot tracks.

With increasing Chinese threat on our northern frontier and Modi govt at the Centre, it is expected that NE states of Indian Union will see a better future. India off course can not progress without taking NE states on board. Recent Union budget which talks about infrastrure development in the border areas appears to be a positive step towards this. Let us pray it becomes a reality.

Has India matured as a Democracy?

Is India a matured democracy, is a question that had been lurking in the minds of most of Indians till General Elections 2014. 16 May 14 has ruled out all misconceptions, misnomers and wrong notions about the maturity of Indian voter. Today, we feel proud to say that the Indian voter has really matured and has  risen above caste, colour, creed and religion. Afterall, Indians want transition into 21st century. Therefore, if I may put it correctly, May16 is a great day in the history of India.

All our political pundits have been proved wrong, this time. Prediction about polarisation of votes has been set aside for the first time as is evident from clear mandate for one single political party or alliance branded as non secular by  all opponents in unison. Our matured voter has realised that religion alone will do no good to the Indian society. They want GEETA or KORAN in one hand and LAPTOP in other, they want development, they want  inflation to be controlled,  they want transition from developing country  into a developed one. That is why lethargic UPA Govt failed to feel the pulse of our people and landed up losing miserably, thereby making history. Even messiahs of dalits, minorities and aam aadmi also mis calculated the mood of the electorate and failed  beyond imagination. They  all need to do a lot of home work next time.

Indians this time voted for Modi and not for the BJP alone despite all criticism and bickering by opponents. This election saw the lowest ebb of personal attacks and counter attacks basically hitting below the belt. Despite all this, people gave thumping majority to Modi. Therefore, is this an indication, in some way, for India for heading towards Presidential form of governance? I leave this as a food for thought.

Young voters were hallmark of this election and it is a thing to rejoice as they can not be fooled  anymore by our so called clever politicians by false promises and expectations. This time it has been proved beyond doubt that the Govt has to perform to survive. 'Aya ram gaya rams' like Aam aadmi party has no role in today's transitional politics unless they themselves reform. Stupid gimmicks won't yield any results. Even Team Modi has an up hill task for meeting expectations of people of India.

Indian Democracy

2014 General Elections in India have witnessed the most ugly face of Indian politics. Political parties are indulging in unwarranted allegations and counter allegations involving personal  and frivolous issues which in no way affect the Country and the common man. In a matured democracy, issues which  affect general public should take precedence. Issues like infrastructure development, poverty alleviation, health, education, foreign policy, industrial development, agricultural development etc; should take centrestage in manifesto of political parties instead of petty politics.  Political parties have made certain basic and silly mistakes. Congress is trying to hoodwink and fool the electorate by encashing RTI, Food security bill etc; which are inadequate to hide their incumbancy, corruption, failure of governance which the public has witnessed over the last five years. Latest book published by Mr Baru, media advisor in PMO, adequately proves what people had been witnessing and talking all these years about two power centres in the govt. Mr PM had been a mere puppet in the hands of Mrs Gandhi during the last ten years and more prominently in during the second tenure of UPA. Mr Gandhi has missed the golden opportunity by late entry in to centrestage politics. In my opinion right  moment for him should have been about two years ago when Anna was agitating in Delhi. Mr Kejriwal acted smartly and grabbed the right opportunity to enter active politics. AAP's emergence as king maker in Delhi elections is a great success story mainly because of basic issues  like  incumbency, corruption , exploitation of common man by power companies, water mafia etc; during the previous regime. Mr Kejriwal failed to live up to the expectations of Aam aadmi by quitting just in 49 days.In fact his decision to step into national politics appear to be premature mainly due to short time.It appears that he was obssesed with Delhi success. Other AAP candidates like Kumar Vishwas, Yogender Yadav , Ashutosh, Rakhi Birla etc; had been very vocal, arrogant and disrespectful in their election speeches.BJP on the other hand had been banking on Mr Modi and Gujrat model of governance. No doubt that Gujrat has developed a lot as regards infrastructure, power sector, real estate, agriculture, irrigation, industry etc; but there is lot to be done. All states in India are unique in their own ways. Gujrat development template therefore will not fit in everywhere.Gujratis in fact are business minded and entreprising which is not the case everywhere.Mr Modi also should not resort to personal attacks and hitting below the belt. As regards SP and BSP they are known for hate politics.UP where these parties are in prominence is one of the most under developed states in the country. Voters in these elections are likely to ignore them.Akhilesh Yadav has let down the people of UP very badly almost in every sphere. Farmers in the state are starving as for the first time they have not been paid for their sugar cane despite Allahabad High Court order and the state govt had been a deaf and dumb spectator.Didi of TMC remains to be arrogant. She does not even have respect for Election Commission of India. She is expected to have a greater say in forming the govt at the Centre. Lalu and Nitish are not likely to outshine in Bihar because of regional factors.Besides, there are others who are effective in their own states and will have a say in forming the govt in case NDA fails to win about 275 seats. But, the most amazing thing is that the Indian voter has matured and is intelligent enough to vote the deserving party to power, so let us wait for May 16.
